The tiny island of Kpala is home to several thousand Ghanaians who live without electricity and, for the most part, much opportunity. Following a well established and proven program, Empower Playgrounds Inc. (EPI) is working to install an electricity-generating merry-go-round for the public school which serves half of the island's youth. These systems provide  light for nighttime studies as well as hands-on science kits to enhance the quality of education these children receive while at school. You can help support EPI by providing an LED light or a hands-on science kit for students.

The Need

According to district education officials and the national Ministry of Education, Kpala has been classified as a deprived and vulnerable area and stands in greater need of help and support. With mostly volunteer teachers, many of whom dropped out of middle school to return as teachers, opportunities to break the poverty cycle are virtually non-existant. By increasing the access and quality of education, EPI hopes to empower these children to break through generational poverty and change the course of Ghana's future.

Empower Playgrounds, Inc. (EPI) is a non-profit organization started by with the help from faculty and students at Brigham Young University.   Their mission is to enhance educational opportunities for children in deprived villages by providing renewable energy through electricity-generating play- ground equipment, smart LED lanterns, and hands-on science kits. These schools not only benefit from EPI’s electricity-generating play equipment, but also the children benefit from a custom science education module, which helps to enhance the direct learning of rural students by using the play equipment as a living lab.
