The Need
India, like many other communities around the world is suffering from ongoing deforestation and poor land-use practices. This negatively affects the sustainability of these native communities by causing rapid declines in soil fertility, availability of fresh water, fuelwood, fruits, and animal forage. As a result, many are often forced to move from their native lands to live in the slums in search of finding some work. This can be mitigated through agroforestry- a land-use system that integrates agriculture, trees, people and animals in the same space, resulting in improved soil and water quality, higher yields, more biodiversity, and improved standards of living. Trees for the Future uses this method to train such communities that suffer from the problems of deforestation and to facilitate the diffusion and promotion of these much needed strategies. Agroforestry techniques are tailored to the needs of the community. Aside from impacting local communities, deforestation contributes to global warming as well. Trees for the Future is an agroforestry resource center helping people in developing countries improve their rural livelihoods through the introduction of environmentally sustainable land management projects focused on beneficial tree planting. Most communities around the world recognize that they need to plant trees on their degraded lands if they are to improve their lives. Moreover, with global climate change this work is even more important to help offset increased energy usage by developed countries. Trees for the Future provide technical knowledge on agroforestry and sustainable development, along with planting materials so that communities can return their degraded lands and struggling farms back to sustainable production.
Since 1988, Trees for the Future has helped thousands of communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia to improve their livelihoods and their environment by planting over 70 million trees. The trees planted by Trees for the Future remove approximately one and a half million tons of CO2 from the global atmosphere each year. They are also active locally, educating students and communities about global issues, our role in the environment, and energy efficiency.
