You can help preserve the rich musical culture in Cape Verde, a country plagued by poverty, by providing the opportunity for children to make music education an integral part of their lives. This gift will help provide instruments and supplies for Project SALT's music school in Espargos or in Santa Maria on the island of Sal.

The Need

Cape Verde is a small developing country with about 20% of the population living on less than $1.25 (U.S.) a day. The country prospered during the transatlantic slave trade but since then has been plagued by poverty.
Cape Verde is a nation whose history, daily life, culture and aspirations are all expressed in music – all of which are in danger of being lost due to poverty. Instruments for the children in the Music School are not available on the small island country of Cape Verde, so instruments need to be brought in from Portugal and the U.S.

A World for a Sustainable Humanity (A W.I.S.H.) is an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide models and support for life sustaining activities that integrate solutions to poverty and the environment while fostering self-reliance. It was founded in March of 1995 and is registered as an NGO in fourteen countries and states.

Salt is a project of A W.I.S.H. whose mission is to preserve the rich musical traditions of Cape Verde. The project's goal is to provide the community with practical resources and training as part of a long-term approach to economic empowerment. Project SALT has created and runs a language-arts and music school, a library, a recording studio and an instrument-fabrication workshop that brings new opportunities to a talented but under-funded people, espeically children.
