Your support of this project will help train students in the Water Guards Program which includes 4 entertaining and informative training modules: 1) importance of water, 2) making drinking water, 3) preventing leaks, and 4) repairing leaks. Also, the program teaches its students to disseminate what they learn in the training to the rest of their peers in order to engage and equip the whole school community to reduce unnecessary and wasteful water consumption.

The Need

Costa Rica has a tradition of conserving its natural resources, with more than 20% of its national territory protected. However, the current water sanitation system only covers 30% of the country, with 4% of wastewater treated, and no culture of water conservation. By training the next generation of elementary and high school students in water consumption and management practices, we empower children to take a leadership role in reducing water consumption at their school and build a culture of water conservation in Costa Rica. The Water Guards Program has already trained over 5,000 students and resulted in water consumption reduction of 20% per student at more than 120 schools.

Amigos of Costa Rica works with the CRUSA Foundation to support projects in three areas of interest: Education, Environment, and Science and Technology in Costa Rica. They collaborate with operating partners in Costa Rica to design and develop high-impact projects in each of our funding areas, and Amigos leads efforts to partner with U.S.-based individuals, foundations, and corporations too bring additional resources to CRUSA-approved projects.

Amigos of Costa Rica works with Aliarse, the Water Supply and Sewage Institute (AyA) and the Ministry of Education of Costa Rica in a unique public-private partnership to dramatically engage Costa Rican youth to build a culture of water conservation and reduce water consumption by 70% in 50 schools with the highest water consumption per student.
