The caste system still is an important predictor of a students chances of obtaining an advanced education in Nepal. You can allow an orphaned child from a low caste to receive a proper education by supporting their tuition, room, and board for one year.

The Need

Nepal is the world's 15th illiterate country. More than half the total population of Nepal can not read and write. Unfortunately, the orphaned and lower caste children are most affected. They are usually not able to attend school after their first few years of education because the mountain villages offer only a primary education locally. For more advanced education the children need to board in the larger towns where the more advanced schools are found which is too expensive for most rural families.

Himalayan HealthCare began in 1992 to create sustainable development programs in the remote areas of Nepal in order to improve the quality of life for its people. Himalayan HealthCare achieves its mission by providing primary healthcare, community education, and income generation programs that enable people to be self-supporting. They are non-governmental, non-profit and non-sectarian. Some of their outreach programs have specifically targeted women because Nepal is one of the very few countries where the life expectancy of women is less than that of men.
