Of all the work Esperança conducts, none has more dramatic effect than our surgical missions. Each mission is dedicated to either general surgery or a surgical specialty such as plastic surgery, orthopedic, ophthalmology, pediatric, gynecology, and urology. All operations performed significantly improve quality of life for our patients and in some cases are life-saving. Volunteer surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses come from throughout the U.S., procuring medical supplies for their mission and paying their own travel expenses. Each team travels 1-2 weeks and accomplishes between 40 and 50 surgeries. While our doctors are in the host country we provide training to local health professionals. A full surgical mission costs $7000 or $156 per patient.

You can provide a woman with the opportunity to decide when to have children, allowing her to continue her education and work until the family has the means to feed their children. A planned pregnancy is often a healthier pregnancy. Your donation of $30 will help provide a woman with eight months of contraception.

Tumaini, a community-based organization in Nairobi, Kenya, provides supplemental care to those infected with and affected by HIV, particularly in areas that are not funded by PEPFAR or other grants. Your donation will help cover the costs associated with providing medication to one HIV infected individual in need in Nairobi.

Nepali village midwives provide regular prenatal examinations that include a history and physical examination and pregnancy counseling.  For just $30, you can help Himilayan Healthcare administer tetanus immunization and provide a supply of vitamins, iron, and folic acid to one pregnant woman in Nepal.  

MADRE and our partner organizations in the Palestinian region are responding to the escalating violence in Gaza by bringing medical care to injured civilians, particularly women and children.

In several communities, MADRE is working in collaboration with the Indigenous Information Network to install community water collection points or water collection tanks. For water collection points, we will construct barriers to protect the water sources from outside contaminants. The barriers have outlets to allow water to flow freely downstream and to be carried by pipes to the water collection points that are closer to villages and can be accessed any time of day. We will also develop watering troughs for animals to prevent erosion and environmental deterioration of the areas around clean water sources. For water collection tanks, MADRE will install the appropriate equipment to ensure a regular source of clean water for area schools. All of MADRE's clean water projects will be conducted in close consultation with community members, who will receive training on health, hygiene, and the maintenance of community water systems.
